Data Science Core

The mission of the Data Science Core (DSC) of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center (USC Norris) is to provide integrated state-of-the-art biostatistics and informatics support to USC Norris investigators working on all aspects of cancer research from basic science to translational and clinical studies, and cancer etiology to cancer control. The Data Science Core members work with USC Norris investigators on the planning, design, conduct, analysis, and reporting of cancer research studies. Core members also play a key role in clinical trials protocol review and study monitoring at USC Norris.

Bioinformatics Core

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary science that brings together approaches from biology, genomics, biostatistics, computer science, mathematics, medicine and health. At a basic functional level, bioinformatics is the application of computing tools to biological data to make it understandable. Thus, bioinformatics helps to gather, store, organize, and analyze large volumes of data, or big data, whereby such data can be transformed into interpretable pieces of information. When applied to gerontology research, bioinformatics incorporates the investigator’s goal of using computational tools and resources to answer research questions aimed at improving human health across the lifespan, and into older ages.

Clinical Research Informatics

The SC CTSI provides services enabling complete access and analysis of patient data from the electronic medical records of Keck Medicine of USC, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles Department of Health Services. We also provide de-identified access to data from partners in federated research networks such as 20 Million patients in the Patient-Centered National Network for Effectiveness Research (pSCANNER), the Los Angeles Data Resource (LADR), the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network PCORNET and more than 158 million patient records in Cerner Health Facts. Not sure how to navigate through all these data sources? We can help.
