As an FYI, the Andrew Carnegie Fellows competition will not be taking place in 2023. As per their website: “Carnegie Corporation of New York is currently awaiting the arrival in January 2023 of our new president, Dame Louise Richardson, who has served as a juror for the Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program since 2016. During this transition period, the Corporation has decided to suspend applications for the 2023 class. The Corporation will continue to support all current fellows and anticipates relaunching the program in the future.”
Slots: 2. One junior and one senior faculty member. A junior scholar is defined as someone who received his/her Ph.D. within the last ten years (2011-2021, for the 2022 fellowship program). A junior scholar may hold any title, e.g., assistant professor or associate professor. The “junior” status is determined by the year in which his/her terminal degree was earned.

Who May Serve as PI: To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen or have permanent U.S. residency status and you must have been nominated by one of a designated group of individuals that includes university presidents, leaders of think tanks, and publishers.
We welcome candidates holding a terminal degree other than a Ph.D. In addition, we also welcome candidates with exceptional experience that qualifies them as a senior professional or intellectual, e.g., a journalist, author, theater professional, or current or former diplomat.

Process for Limited Submissions
PIs must submit their application as a Limited Submission through the USC Research and Innovation (R&I) Application Portal: https://rii.usc.edu/oor-portal/.
Materials to submit include:
- (1) Single Page Proposal Summary (0.5” margins; single-spaced; font type: Arial, Helvetica, or Georgia typeface; font size: 11 pt). Page limit includes references and illustrations. Pages that exceed the 1-page limit will be excluded from review.
- (2) CV – (5 pages maximum)
Note: The portal requires information about the PIs and Co-PIs in addition to department and contact information, including the 10-digit USC ID#, Gender, and Ethnicity. Please have this material prepared before beginning this application.
Purpose
The purpose of the Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program is to support high-caliber scholarship in the social sciences and humanities, making it possible for the recipients to devote time to research and writing that addresses pressing issues and cultural transitions affecting us at home and abroad.
For the 2022 program, there are four broad topic areas that include a wide range of suggested subtopics:
- Global connections and global ruptures
- Strengthening U.S. democracy and exploring new narratives
- Environments, natural and human
- Technological and cultural creativity—potential and perils
Budgetary Requirements: In nominating a scholar for this fellowship, a university is indicating its continuing support for that scholar and the administration’s intention to provide in-kind support such as full retirement and health benefits when the scholar takes time off to work on his/her research and writing.
